Hello and Happy New Year! It's been a while since I've written here. The later half of the previous year, I was busy with my new job at Anthropologie. For the first time ever, I felt settled with my job and being in a workplace with like-minded individuals.

One of the wonderful and talented people I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with, is Andrew Ritchie, blogger for Martha Moments. I thought I was Martha-obessesed until I met Andrew! His blog even scored him an invite to the Martha Stewart show a couple of years back.

Andrew did a lovely little feature on yours truly (moi) on his blog and for that, I wanted to say thank you Andrew - for a lovely start to the new year.

With that being said, I've done a quick update on the shop - featuring one of my favorte new designs - chevrons.

My mum and I screen printing. She's become quite the pro!

Let me just start by saying, sorry blog for having neglected you so much lately. I've started a new job where I wake up at 4:45am and commute for two hours a day. In addition, making sure my home is in proper order and of course, working on new designs and products for the shop.

Hard work indeed pays off and I'm so excited to announce that our tea towels can now be found at Kid Icarus in Kensington Market, Toronto. It's one of my favourite spots in the city and KI is one of the cutest shops around as it doubles as a store for the handmade and print shop. Be sure to drop by and support local and handmade artists.

Inspired by Nature

Here's a preview of some designs I've been working on. The tree pattern was inspired by my road trip to Miami earlier this year. The trees in Pennsylvania really stood out - they looked so perfect and somehow magical. The print is done with india ink on mylar. It took me over a week to do each individual leaf with a brush.

The random feather design was something that happened to come to mind. The print above is a 4 colour screen print on hemp/ cotton that I sewed into a tea towel. I hope to have it on the shop soon.

The colours, where inspired by my pedicure/ manicure. I mixed the light blue fabric paint to Sephora's Havana Dreams nail colour, which is my favorite new blue.

There are so many other designs that I have in mind that need to come to fruition. I hope to share them with you soon!

Strawberry Jam

I went strawberry picking this weekend and was nearly trampled over by a woman who insisted on stepping over me to stay on the same path, as opposed to moving over. I was completely speechless as she laid her hand on my shoulder and proceeded to swing her leg over me!

Here I am, happily picking strawberries before being trampled over by an inconsiderate picker.

The recipe: "Children's Strawberry Jam" from The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook - a 384 page book on jams, marmalade's, jellies and lots of tips and wisdom.

Jams are best made in small batches. We picked 18 lbs of strawberries and this was only 8 lbs. 10 more to go!

Our first try at this jam took longer to cook than anticipated. The sun had since long gone when we began filling jars.

Finally! Beautiful strawberry jam! Geoff goes through a lot of jam so I hope this lasts us into the fall!

Home Sweet Home

While I was in Florida, Geoff worked non-stop on installing new floors. I'm happy that everything is finally coming together.

We've put a lot of work into the house - painting, renovating, making accessories and furniture or collecting original artwork (from my brother mainly). I personally love looking at other people's homes for inspiration so I thought it might be fun to share mine with you.

1. Large metal tiled frame with recycled mirror, made by Geoff.

2. Ikea chairs spray painted white.

3. I screen printed and hand-dyed this runner in my No.03 pattern.

1. Screen printed and handmade pennants. By me.

2. "The Mocking of Christ" by my brother, German.

3. Handmade pillows. By me.

(I got the idea from a decor book to cover an ugly couch with fabric. Much better than navy leather any day.)

4. My favorite piece so far: Geoff and I designed this coffee table/ bench with heavy metal legs. My father cut and made the metal leg frame, while Geoff stained and finished the pine table top.

5. Geoff's first wood work project - 3 individual pine shadow boxes.

You can barely tell, but I pushed the 3 boxes together to make shift a side table.

Printing In My Home Studio

After taking a textile printing course, and reading numerous books, I finally set up my home printing studio. Through some minor trial and error, I finally devised a system where I know exactly how long to shoot (burn) my screens for the perfect print.

Since the screen is so big, I'm using clamps to keep it in place while I print my tea towel. Typically Geoff or Diana help me with multiple registered prints.

I'm really happy with the end results - an eclectic print with serene colours that would match just about any table setting. These tea towels will be available on the shop soon, but the one pictured here, is mine to keep. : )

It's Really Spring!

Geoff started a spring tradition last year - growing our own flowers. We started 3 weeks ago and our plants are already looking happy and healthy. I can't remember what we're growing - morning glory and something else... Regardless, it's fun watching them grow.

Happy Birthday Grace!

Spring also means birthdays galore- husband, family, friends and Diana's mum's birthday. I baked her 2 (!) carrot cakes with cream cheese frosting - her favourite. Of course, I couldn't resist baking one for keeps. The last cake came out of the oven at 8pm last night and half is already gone.

My favourite carrot cake recipe is from Canadian Living and is aptly named Canada's Best Carrot Cake. It contains crushed pineapple, which gives the cake a soft and moist texture. Added bonus, your home will smell really yummy, like carrot spice goodness!

I recommend CL's recipe to the one's I made last year (from Martha) any day. Martha's were too greasy and gave me a bit of a stomach ache. Ick.

Recipe: Ravioli Lasagna with Sausage & Mushrooms

Pre-dinner drinks: trying to calm Diana's neurotic tendencies...

4 parts dry sec (or vermouth), 1 part creme de cassis.

My over exposed lasagna shot. The setting sun was super bright.

Dinner at my house yesterday - Diana made my day when she told me I was her favorite cook ever! Thanks bff!

I made ravioli lasagna with sausage and mushrooms (from Chatelaine). The first time I made this recipe I stuck to the directions exactly. It was really good, but a bit heavy on the sauce.

This time, I varied the recipe (since I didn't have crushed tomatoes in my cupboard). I mixed small can of tomato paste with a can of diced tomatoes (796mL) and I got a much lighter, and still super-tasty tomato sauce. Last minute, I threw spinach leaves into the lasagna toss to add colour to the dish.

Here's another variation for the cheese topping. I didn't have mozzarella, so Diana helped me by shredding cheddar and topped if off with some asiago.

Tip: In my house it's just Geoff and I so making a 9 x 13 dish of pasta is too much food for us. I split the lasagna into 3 dishes - one for dinner that night, a little one for my parents, and a portion that I froze for another day's dinner.

This is my favorite kind of recipe - easy & super tasty and relatively healthy. For a vegetarian option - just delete the sausage. Happy cooking. : )

Recipe: Double Chocolate Cookies

I love chocolate so naturally one of my favorite cookies are Martha Stewart's Double Chocolate Cookies. Straight out of the oven, the warm cookies ooze hot chocolate chips as you bite into them.

I prefer to eat them cooled, when the chocolate chips are solidified and the rest of the cookie is soft. I have them with a cup of hot orange pekoe tea (clear thank you), which is absolute perfection.

Variation: Instead of chunks of milk chocolate, I lazily threw in chocolate chips. And, instead of making over-sized cookies, as suggested, I made them a standard cookie size, using my OXO cookie dough scoop. I ended up with over 4 dozen cookies, perfect for sharing.

Inside Books: The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berg

Happy Monday and welcome to a new section of the blog for book previews/ reviews.

The idea for this category comes from my own book hunting experience in suburban bookstores which don’t often carry a wide variety of design/ art related books. A lot of the time, I search for info online – where helpful previews of a books contents aren't always available and subjective reader comments are all you have to go on.

My first review and latest book purchase is The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berg (ISBN: 0865652511).

This book has been on my wishlist for months so I was really excited to finally get it.

Unfortunately, the book wasn’t as I'd remembered from months earlier. I was expecting opulence and exuberant décor and styling (which it has) to jump out of the pages and inspire me, which it didn't.

My favourite of their eight homes was the one in Marrakesh. Perhaps I should look for a book on Marrakesh design. Recommendations anyone?

Beautiful book featuring beautiful homes but it didn't inspire me enough and for $77 (amazon.ca price), I thought it'd be best to return it.

Bright Pinks and Sunny Yellows and Gold

This is what experimenting looks like. Yellow and bright pink fabric paint are pulled across an acetate stencil (attached to a screen) with a textile squeegee.

The inspiration: I use yellow screen printing tape to protect my frames from water and paint. Printing with only yellow seemed a little boring so pink was added to the mix.

The pulling of the two colours makes an exciting combination. I love how it starts with the clear separation of yellow and pink and then moves to sunny yellows and oranges on the other side of the fabric, when the colours have been pulled more.

The lining consists of bright pink crosses screen printed on cotton twill. It keeps the geometric and bright coloured theme from the exterior of the pouch, yet varies enough to act as a little surprise every time the pouch is opened.

Geoff says this is his favorite print to date. He's requested I make him a travel bag with blues and greys streaked across the screen as per the above. I'll be sure to post it once it's complete.

Subdued Tablewares

My colour obsession continues but this time, with a more subdued palette. I love these gorgeous glazed china spoons. They'd be a great addition to my collection of tablewares.

Also loving the beautiful Pools collection, by Fleet Objects, of ceramic pieces with subtle colour painted inside. So pretty!

And how can you not love these pretty wooden doily coasters from Uncommon?

Upcycling Craft Project - Pennants

I thought I'd make pennants to decorate the shop for our upcoming craft show - SpeakEasy. Here I'm creating a template for the little flags. I wanted a reason to use left over scraps of fabric. So much better than throwing them out.

The flags look pretty cute against the little army of pencil cases, makeup cases and coin purses!

Finally, I thought I'd share my inspiration board. As you probably know, this spring I'm feeling loud, saturated colour. It's how I'll make my patterns pop against the neutral canvas of unbleached cottons.

Shop screen printed aprons

It's officially March and we're that much closer to spring!

Sneak Peek: Handmade Wooden Key Hooks

Geoff finished his wooden key hooks a couple of days ago and is in the midst of making a couple more.

The above were stained in Cherry (with brass hooks) and English Chestnut (with pewter hooks). I love how the English Chestnut matches our table almost perfectly.

Again, these are items that will be on our etsy shop come March.

India: People Place Culture History

I took this gorgeous book out of the library. The content and the pictures are excellent research material I’ll probably end up buying it. (Amazon's marketplace is my favourite way to buy obscure books for cheap.)

India is my influence for our spring collection. I should be further along in the design process, but alas, January has been my procrastinating month. I’ve just started on sketches.

Not sure how other people work, but a lot of my designs just come to me. It begins with a fleeting image which keeps festering until it’s all consuming. From there I start sketching, then researching and touching up sketches until it’s ready to be finalized.

This will be the first time that I’m doing a cohesive collection with all original artwork and I’m excited to see how it’ll turn out. Stay tuned!

Sneak Peak: Key Shaped Hook

Spring 2011 Preview: Lime Shop collaboration with Geoff Martin Designs.

Diana and I are planning very exciting things for our spring collection - original pieces that are entirely handprinted, hand-dyed and handmade. I'm also excited to announce a collaboration between The Lime Shop and my husband, Geoff.

Freshly sanded, unfinished details.

Geoff is a talented, self taught, wood worker who specializes in home accessories and furniture. One of the first pieces for spring will include handcrafted wooden key hooks.

He made his first key hook last spring for our foyer. I wanted something wooden, that represented what he does and something quirky, yet classic to go with my with my raspberry coloured front door.

The original design was inspired by a small 2 inch metal key that I bought at House Warmings in Oakville.

Our home is full of beautiful pieces Geoff has made including - a foyer table with matching bench, coffee table table (currently being made), my sewing table and various handcrafted tiled mirrors.

Sample Sale - Tea Towel

Sample Sale - Handprinted, handmade tea towel, $10

I've been pretty lazy since the holidays but I finally got around to experimenting with drawing fluid and screen filler. It's a bit tedious but fun. The result is an organic hand drawn print, which is what I was looking for.

Geoff built the frame from scraps and I stretched the screen. (I found it's much easier to do when you wet the screen first. I'll have to post a tutorial on this another time.)

From there I printed my pattern on cotton to make a tea towel. The repeat registration came out a bit off so I'm selling it as a sample sale on our shop.

Drunk, Sad, Hungry & Sleepy

From 2004-2006 Diana and I ran an online boutique called Lime. We were well known for our original handmade iPod cases, though we also made wallets, totes and other small accessories.

While organizing a box of product from our old Lime days and came across this super cute mini-series that my brother Rene had created for us. Their names (clockwise) - Drunk, Sad, Hungry and Sleepy.

The idea came about when I asked Rene to draw me a drunk sheep for a special project. The illustration was put on cotton and sewn into a mini stuffed toy. A couple of weeks later, Rene had drawn additional characters for us. Even now, I'm still smitten with these little guys.

I always enjoy collaborating with my brothers but Rene and I haven't had the chance to work together for years now. He's been busy creating original video games for his studio, Revolver Games.

You can check out his fun Arcade Shoot-'em-up game on Galaxy Parade.com. In addition to the original concept, having created the characters and the game, Rene also created the original score. But seriously, it's pretty fun. Give it a try!

Recipe: Maple Banana Bread with Flax

Instead of throwing out over ripe bananas, I'd rather use them in breads, muffins or smoothies. Craving something hearty and healthy, I went online and decided to try this recipe from Chatelaine.com - Maple Banana Bread with Flax.

I changed up a few things and the bread came out really well. Hearty and healthy, just like I wanted. (Even though I ended up smothering it in butter.)

This bread is great for breakfast and healthy snacking and it also freezes well so you can make it in batches - eat some now and store some for later.

Variations: Instead of the suggested whole wheat flour, I used rolled oats, which I figured would work well with the flax seeds.

Instead of the suggested vegetable oil or melter butter, use safflower oil (which is know for its health benefits).

Tip: If you have whole flax seeds, you can grind them in your coffee grinder for a fine grind.

Mouth Watering Goodness

It's been a good day so far. I found my missing Ray-Bans! I was afraid that I'd dropped them on the street and that some stranger was walking around with my prescription sunglasses. It's a funny thought but I was sad at the possibility of losing my favorite sunglasses.

Another good thing - eating the tastiest shortbread ever. I really wanted to eat the whole thing but that would have been bad, right? These Almond & Sugared Rose shortbread cookies contain sugared rose bits, rose water and natural rose oil. Can you imagine how lovely they are?

I picked up a pack at the One Of A Kind Show but you can get them online or in their Toronto store by appointment. Yes - that's how awesome they are.

I've never been one for new years resolutions but I'm a big believer in setting goals in order to stay focused. (Is that the similar?)

The last couple of years I wasn't able to accomplish my goals - I worked hard for a promotion that went to someone else, worked hard for people set in their ways and somewhat accomplished expanding my designer wardrobe (I wish I was kidding on that one). Funny enough, when I lost my 9-5 job, that's when everything became clear.

I took classes to explore printmaking, focused on my art and began producing accessories that I really love to make and am proud of. Most importantly, I developed a stronger bond with my husband, friends and family.

Of course I have artistic goals in mind but otherwise, I can't wait to see what the new year will bring. Over planning can be worse than not having a plan.

I'll end this post with a nice quote from this morning's newspaper -

"As you think, so shall you become." - Bruce Lee

Everything on this plate was incredibly delicious and was made from scratch by my mum, brother and myself.

Macaron ♥. My brother German made these beautiful little treats in dark chocolate ganache and buttercream fillings. I do believe they're his own recipes.

I made and decorated my own cake. This was a new recipe that I tried from Chatelaine. It's their Velvety Beet Cake with Raspberry Icing - the pink came from the fruit and not food colouring. I diverted from their raspberry icing and concocted my own. I'll share it in the near future.

Custom tea towels - Happy Christmas family!

Instead of gifting useless things for people, Geoff and I have gotten into the habit of giving yummy treats (and of course crafts) during the holidays for relatives who already have everything.

Last year, we made a big batch of Nigella Lawson's delicious Rocky Road and gifted it in a cute glass canister from Crate & Barrel.

This year, we're giving out Sweet Paul's Cranberry & Maple Loafs (baked in mini loaf pans) accompanied with custom tea towels that Diana and I made and screenprinted by hand.

I think these are great gift ideas that can be used all year round for the people in our lives who have everything.

Interesting tidbit - I heard the average person was spending over $900 on Christmas this year. That's kinda crazy.

Light Fixtures & Feature: Lost Nation

I never thought I'd say "thank goodness it's Monday." Geoff and my father spent 2 grueling days wiring the electrical for overhead lights in my home studio. On day two they were ready to install the light fixtures. Then we discovered that the pendant lamps I bought had no covers and would leave the holes and wires in my ceiling exposed. Whoops.

Moving on - this is Katie Barnstaple's work from Lost Nation. When I saw her booth at the One of A Kind show, I nearly broke down in tears for having gone with empty pockets.

I could just picture her Humane Antlers over top of my bed. Wouldn't that be brilliant?

And I could picture her Wooden Antler Chandelier hoisted above my dining room table.

Her Etsy profile sums up Lost Nation perfectly - "I am obsessed with brining the outdoors inside. I believe a home should reflect what grows and lives around it."

Diana and I went to our first One of a Kind Show last Friday (what took us so long?) and literally had 3 hours to go around the entire show. It was madness.

I briefly met Ashley Coulson of Flakes Paperie. I found out her studio is based in Cambridge, ON and she designs and prints everything herself. She focuses on beautifully silk screened items, from gift tags to stationary to calendars and everything in between.

I really dug her beautiful silk screened wall calendar, but alas, I went to the show with empty pockets.

Etsy shop update - Elephants handprinted Tea Towels

Diana and I printed, pressed and sewed these last week. They're printed on a hemp/ cotton blend textile which washes and wears very nicely.

The tea towel features my original artwork which was inspired by a CBC elephant documentary and my fondness for Indian design. This is my take on the two.

Etsy shop update - Hearts/ Moomin Reversible Kids Apron

We made these back in August and it's about time they made their way to the shop. Keep your eyes peeled for more kids arpons to come.

The reversible kids aprons were inspired by Geoff's nieces. I made Mackenzie an apron for her 6th birthday and the idea just spun off from there.

Recipe: Spice Cookies

This is what happens when my plans fall through - I bake. Last night I made Sweet Paul's Spice Cookies.

I had everything in my pantry and the recipe was easy enough but I didn't like this part - "divide the dough into 30 pieces and roll each piece to a ball".

I hate touching dough and it's the reason why I hardly make bread. Anyway, instead of dipping my hands in the sticky-ish dough and rolling 30 balls, I grabbed my cookie dough scoop and just plopped the raw dough balls into a little bowl of sugar, coated them and then placed them on a cookie sheet. SP's recipe says it makes 30 cookies but I ended up getting 51 cookies using the scoop method.

After they cooled (and I ate some), I wrapped and boxed 10 cookies as a thank you gift to someone using bakers twine. (I picked mine up at Crate & Barrel.) This is a great stress free recipe for the holidays which I plan on gifting.

Antler Rings and Axe Brooches from Touch the Dutch

Here is Anneke van Bommel's work of Touch the Dutch. I was already familiar with her work having seen it at Distill Gallery. Turns out you can also buy her wares on Etsy.

Anneke is a multidisciplinary artist who works with paper, wood and porcelain in addition to metals. Her art always has a cool Canadiana theme.

I'm a sucker for small unique earrings and have my eye on Anneke's Bird Beak Studs. They're adorable!

Last month it was my camera and now it's my computer.

My mac stopped working last night. Apparently OSX quit! How does an operating system just stop working?

Anyway - the artist features I was working on will have to be put on hold as all of the pictures are on my mac and stupidly, I didn't back up. You don't exactly think your computer will die from one day to the next. Hopefully the people at Apple can help...

In the meanwhile, I'll leave you all with this really awesome clothes pin installation I found. When things look wary, find something that makes you smile.

I met Cameron MacLean of Offcut Studio at SpeakEasy and was instantly drawn to the clean lines of his wooden clocks.

Cameron's collection is warm & cozy and has a contemporary Canadiana feel. His Etsy shop includes - wooden skate guards, rear wood bike fenders and wooden vases made out of walnut, maple, white oak and cherry offcut woods.

The perfect gift/ stocking stuff for the artsy person in your life. Uppercase - the "magazine for the creative and curious" is based out of Calgary.

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a magazine called Uppercase. I stopped by Good Egg last night and picked up Issue #7. I'm thrilled to say, this magazine does not disappoint. I couldn't help but be inspired by what I read in the editors note and the Community blurb. I had to put the issue down before I stayed up all night reading it from cover to cover.

Uppercase's content covers a little something for everyone - crafts, art, photography, type, books, writers, collections of peoples stuff. It's such a great read!

Personally, their only shortcoming is they don't focus on enough Canadian content. As a Canadian reading a beautifully original Canadian publication, I would really like to see more featured artists from our country. Otherwise, Uppercase is perfect.

I'm going through an Austen stage and it seems to be coming through in my designs - the above pattern came to mind as I read Emma.

From a sketch it soon became a block print. I'm really happy with the results. I'll have the one-of-a-kind tea towel on our Etsy shop tomorrow.

On the weekend, Diana and I stopped by the Yorkville Anthropologie. I really dug the pattern on these candle tins and bowls...

This Is An Overdue Post: Birthdays and Halloween

Mouth watering croquembouche. Recipe from House & House, November 2010.

I left out the the candied ginger the recipe calls for and they turned out very well.

It runs in the family - we love to cook, bake and eat.

My brother made these chocolate macaroons for our mum.

Instead of birthday cake, I surprised my mum with the croquembouche she was drooling over in the pages of House & Home.

Aside from burning my fingers on hot syrup, and almost having it fall apart as we added the last bits, it was well worth the effort. (Scanned recipe pages from the magazine below.)

Then for Halloween, I made Sweet Paul's Salted Caramel and Chocolate Cake.

The cake and frosting were was simple enough to make and assemble. I did though have trouble with the caramel. Afraid to burn it, I pulled it off the stove too soon and my caramel was too pale and runny. I cheated and thickened it with corn starch and gave it a deeper colour with food colouring.

The cake was probably one of the richest, moistest (is that a word?!) cakes I've ever had. Doesn't help that I'm a chocolate addict.

A November Lunch

I'm taking a screen printing course at my local college and I recently completed the colour print registering assignment. My project ended up on tea towels that I've made by hand. I'm really pleased with how the lines came out - as if they had been drawn on with crayons.

You might also be wondering about what's on my toast... (Or perhaps not.) It's apple butter from Sweet Paul's fall issue.

Geoff came home with a ginormous bag of apples the other day. Not wanting to eat apples for breakfast lunch and dinner, we made it into apple butter. YUM! So easy and super delicous. Try it with a bit of cream cheese on crackers. It's really good! (Can you tell I'm hungry?)

Last night marked our first Canzine in four years and it was excellent to be back. Thanks to everyone who came by to say hi.

It's always inspiring to attend Canzine because of all the talented and ambitious artists just doing what they love. If you've never been to this event, try to go next year. It always rolls around at the end of October.

Impressive Dinner: Beef Bourguignon

Sweet Paul Magazine, page 65

I have Amy to thank for my recent obsession - Paul Lowe's blog Sweet Paul.

In the Fall issue of his online magazine he features amazing looking comfort foods and rich cakes. Since my in-laws visited on the weekend, I decided to try something new (which is either very brave or very stupid) and settled on SP's Beef Bourguignon (p. 65) followed with his Blueberry Streusel Cake for dessert (p. 51).

I started the Beef Bourguignon in the morning and left it simmering in my slow cooker for 4.5 hours and went out for the afternoon. By the time we got home, dinner was done. All I had to do was put together the streusel, which was easy, stick it in the oven and relax before dinner. We served the beef with some mini red potatoes and multigrain bread. (I had pictures but they were terrible due to poor lighting.)

The meal was impressive with rich flavours and the cubes of meat fell apart when pierced with a fork. We served four hungry people and still had left overs, which is always nice. The streusel didn't disappoint either (I made it with mixed berries) with it's of condensed milk topping. Everyone was licking their spoons at the end and was full and happy.

Now I just need an excuse to make SP's Salted Caramel and Chocolate Cake (p. 55). Halloween perhaps?

Recipe: Earl Grey Tea Cookies

I styled our latest photoshoot with Earl Grey Tea Cookies (from Martha Stewart's Cookies). Recipe can be found here.

I looked through a few books and finally settled on this recipe. I was looking for something different, light in flavour and easy to make.

I wasn't sure what to think of these at first but now I really like them. The flavour in this cookie is so light and delicate and the texture resembles shortbread.

Gift Idea: I was going to see my mum briefly so I gift wrapped some cookies for her. I did this by rolling the stack of cookies in a sheet of vellum. Then I taped the sides of the roll and then folded and taped the bottom. I finished it by tying a lovely green grosgrain ribbon on top. Idealy if you were to give these as a gift, include a nice handwritten tag stating what type of cookie you are gifting.

The Clothing Show 2010

I pulled these pictures from a blog some weeks ago and it's too bad that I can't remember which one it was. The colours and patters are something I could refer to later when designing tea towel or tote bags. Definitely a good starting point for designing my accessories.

I also love the classic elements mixed with contemporary. I want my studio to look like the second room - simple, elegant, modern, neutral palette with a light touch of colour.

Chatelaine's Vanilla Cake with Summer Fruit

I've been awol from the blog lately since I've been working on the launch of the official Lime Shop website. It's up and running now so make sure you check it out!

Since I've been so busy, I've hardly had the time to bake but as soon as I saw this cake in my mum's Chatelaine, I knew I had to try it.

It's pretty simple to make and you probably already have all of the ingredients in your pantry.

I followed the directions exactly as stated in the recipe. In regards to cooking time, I found 65 mins was a little too much . I had checked the cake at 50 mins, but found the middle still needed cooking. (It's a lot of batter that you're baking through.) 65 mins was too much since the cake was a deep brown color and the edges where too tough for my liking. I resolved this by cutting away the edges of the cake to reveal the nice moist cake inside.

Decorating this cake could not have been easier. You literally drizzle your icing on top (if it's too runny, just add more icing sugar to thicken it) and decorate it with fruit.

The recipe calls for 2 peaches, thinly sliced. There was no way I could fit 2 peaches on this cake so I reserved the remaining slices in a bowl. My guests where more than happy to pass the bowl around the table and top their cake with additional fruit.

If you need a simple cake to impress your guests, definitely give this one a try. Just be sure to bake the actual cake an hour or two before your guests arrive to give it time to cool down before decorating it.

CHATELAINE'S VANILLA CAKE WITH SUMMER FRUIT

Makes 12 Servings

FOR CAKE:

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 tbsp baking powder

1 1/2 tsp salt

1 1/4 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature

2 1/2 cups granulated sugar

3 eggs

1 tbsp vanilla

2 1/4 cups milk

FOR ICING:

3 tbsp milk

2 cups sifted icing sugar

1/2 tsp almond extract

3 160 g containers berries

2 thinly sliced peaches

1. Preheat oven to 325F. Spray a 9x13-in. glass baking dish with cooking spray. Line bottom with parchment paper. Spray again. Stir flour with baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.

2. Beat butter with an electric mixer on medium speed in a large bowl until butter is creamy. Add sugar. Cream together until fluffy.

3. Mix in eggs and vanilla. Beat well to incorporate. On low speed, add a third of the flour mixture followed by half of the milk. Repeat additions, ending with flour.

4. Scrape into prepared pan. Smooth top gently. Bake in centre of oven until it is deep golden and a cake tester inserted into centre of cake comes out clean, 65 to 75 min. If cake becomes deep golden before it is done baking, cover very loosely with foil. Cool on a rack 10 min, then remove from pan and cool completely, about 2 hours.

5. Whisk milk into icing sugar until smooth. Whisk in extract. Spread over cooled cake. Slice cake, then serve topped with berries and peaches.

Review: Cupid's Gourmet Cupcakes

I was super excited when Diana introduced me to Cupid's Gourmet Cupcakes. This adorable shop carries fun flavours like The Princess (Vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream frosting), Pucker Up (Lemon yogurt cake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and zest and lemon buttercream frosting), Chai High (Chai tea buttermilk cake with chai tea cream cheese frosting) and my favorite, the Red Velvet.

What makes Cupid's so great are the recipes. The cakes are soft, moist and subtly sweet. The light creamy frostings perfectly complement their paired cakes. Bonus for those with nut allergies, Cupid's prides themselves on being nut-free.

Personally, I love that Cupid's cupcakes aren't greasy. Have you ever had a greasy cupcake? It spoils the whole experience. Just a few months ago, I ordered a red velvet cupcake from a restaurant that was so oily, it left pools of grease on my plate and hands. Not to worry, that won't happen at Cupid's.

With clean decor of white tiles and accessories, Cupid's is warm and inviting. Their Daily Flavours are beautifully displayed as soon as you walk in. The open back area gives you a peak at the busy bakers in the kitchen working on orders for showers and special occasions.

As mentioned, Cupid's rotates flavours. Check out their website for the schedule. Full Cupcakes are priced at $2.50 each, $12.90 for half a dozen and $24.96 for a dozen. Mini cupcakes are priced at $1.15 each, $6.50 for half a dozen and $12.90 for a dozen.

Make sure you go early because they typically sell out well before days end. The shop is open Tues - Fri 10am - 7pm, Sat 10am - 6pm, Sun 11am - 5pm and is closed Mondays. Be sure to stop by, these cakes are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Key Shaped Hook

My husband Geoff is quite the handyman and a talented woodworker. We've been working on our foyer recently, I asked him if it'd be possible to make a key shaped hook out of his scraps. "Sure" he said and got to work. Soon enough, we had a beautiful new hook for our front hall.

Totes and Ducks

The weather's been so lovely, that I couldn't help but shoot the latest Lime Shop items on my patio. I've loaded 3 totes on our etsy shop, with more to come soon.

In between takes, I wandered to the front of the house, to see two visitors - ducks! This is the first time we've ever seen ducks wandering in our neighbourhood. What a nice surprise.

It feels like I've spent forever making my custom stencils, but this weekend was the payoff. I finally got around to printing them on unbleached cotton shoppers. My favorite is the fish scale pattern (in the middle) which took hours to cut out and left my hands crippled. Hard work pays off.

Project: Stenciling

Since an early age, I've loved "how to" tutorials and making my own things. As an adult, I'm still into diy, and really enjoy incorporating it into my day to day life.

I had the idea to stenciling something simple like a grocery tote to transform it into something pretty, unique and personalized. After reading Printing By Hand by Lena Corwin, I felt ready to try my first stencil. (This is an excellent book if you are interested in hand printing. She goes through all sorts of techniques and teaches you what print works best with what project- wood, fabric, etc.)

Here are my steps to making your own stencil.

You'll need:
* Preshrunk cotton tote bag
* Fabric Paint
* Terraskin (or thick grade mylar)
* Exacto knife

* Self Healing Cutting Board

* Paper towels

* Binder clips
* Spray Adhesive (for the use of fabric)
* Stippling Brush or Sponge brush
* Illustration board or other smooth, sturdy surface.

1. I started with an unbleached cotton tote, prewashed and preshrunk it. (Don't skip this step on any project that will be washed at some point. Always preshrink.) If needed, iron your fabric afterwards.
2. While you're waiting for your tote to wash and dry, create your pattern. I did mine on Adobe Illustrator, printed it off and taped it on top of the Terraskin and started cutting away the crosses.
3. With your preshrunk tote and stencil ready - you can prepare your workstation. I laid down an old towel to protect my table from spills.
4. Take your illustration board and put it inside your tote. Make sure the board is centered and the fabric is smoothly laid down. Clip the sides with binder clips to keep the fabric in place.
5. Lightly spray the back of your stencil with adhesive. (Do this outside if possible to prevent spaying your furniture, walls or floor.)
6. Position the tacky side of stencil onto your fabric. Make sure it's adhered well so your paint doesn't bleed.
7. Now the fun part! Take your brush, dip it into the paint, blot any excess off on the paper towel. Start filling your stencil.
8. When you're done, carefully pull your stencil off and wash the paint and adhesive immediately with a bit of dishwashing soap. (Clean your brush too.) The back of your stencil may still be a little tacky but don't worry. Proper cleaning and storage will give your stencil a longer life.
9. You're done! Let your tote bag dry and start using it or, gift it as a really cool unique present.

NOTE: When I first started this project, I was looking for mylar, but my local art supply store only carried a thin grade. My brother suggested I try Terraskin, which feels like plastic, but is made out of stone and is degradable. It cost $3.50 (for a large sheet) and it's nice to the environment. If it's available, I suggest going with Terraskin. It's also easy to cut with a sharp blade.

You can also pick up your stippling brush and fabric paint at the art supply store. I visited Michael's before hand, but found their prices were ridiculously expensive for only a few ounces of fabric paint. I got a much better deal at the art shop.

Lovin' that Pink

What a weekend.

Didn't end up going to Cupcake Camp since eater tickets sold out before I bought one for Geoff and Diana. But, I kept my word and donated a cupcake themed basket with a special Lime Shop apron, piggie spatula, India Tree sprinkles and heart shaped cookie cutter. The winner of the basket contacted me to say thank you. How nice is that?

In lieu of camp, Geoff and I got around the painting the main floor and second level hallway. As we painted, I had the idea to paint the inside of the door magenta and Geoff actually agreed! (Condo rules state all exterior doors have to be ivory.) By Sunday afternoon he was applying the first coat of paint. It looked hot pink at the first coat but it'll deepen in the next couple of coats. Final pics to come.
